Writing Found Me

Writing found me and until that moment I hadn't realized that I was missing.

It’s been six and a half years. I have been going through the motions of daily life. From the outside looking in, it looked mostly OK. There were moments when I could barely function, but I would have a chat with myself, get back up and carry on.

Having a background of helping people to build resilience and sitting with them through some of the worst moments of their lives, must have fortified my resilience toolbox. So even though I hadn’t been aware of it I was probably modeling what I had been teaching.

My friends and family didn’t know that I was missing either, or so I thought! Lately, I keep getting remarks like: ‘So glad to see the real you again.” Very puzzling … why did no one ask me what was going on? Except for one friend who told me flat out — a couple years ago — “get some help!” She said that she had never heard my voice sound so defeated and we have known each other for many years, no one really voiced their opinion.

Looking back, I must acknowledge that everyone around me has been going through the same sadness at different levels. The incident on November 7, 2017, affected our whole family. Layer on top of that the fallout from the pandemic and you have the perfect storm.
