A Time of Need — Learning Leadership in Alternative History Fiction

We all know the adage of being doomed to repeat history. We often use it in leadership to learn from past mistakes and failures. But another worthy exploration is the “What ifs” or even “Bad Brainstorming” to approach solutions with innovation and creativity.

“A Time of Need” by Brent A. Harris is a book that approaches our American Revolution with a twist. George Washington is not our powerful future-president, general, and patriot but rather the infamous Benedict Arnold plays the role. Interesting how this concept can both excite and at the same time, make us uncomfortable.

I have often said that uncomfortable means growth to a large extent. We have to stretch ourselves, our imagination, and our creativity. So I believe strongly in reading both fiction and non-fiction to find growth in our leadership skills. Alternative History fiction teaches us to view things we hold so strongly as truths and facts in a different light. Granted it is still fiction, but it stretches us and at times can even be considered uncomfortable.

You never know where you can learn things and often stories can make truths or new ideas much easier to swallow and understand.
