Happy Father’s Day to my fellow dads.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads who choose to show up and teach.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads who work hard to provide.

Happy Father’s Day to the dads who show their kids how to love a partner, how to love people, how to be strong, how to be vulnerable, how to work, how to play, how to laugh, how to hug and fist bump and tousle hair.

Happy Father’s Day to everyone with a dad. Whether you’d change nothing about how you were raised or you’d change just about everything, you’re on this planet. You’re breathing, you’re uniquely you, and you’re making a mark on this place. That’s cool and you are, too.

Here are three things all parents can tell their kids. I deliver this message to my boys as often as I can, typically as they’re drifting off to sleep.

I love you. I’m proud of you. I’m glad you’re here.

Tell them at bedtime, tell them in a text, tell them over a meal. Just tell them.

I love you. I’m proud of you. I’m glad you’re here.

You won’t be here forever. But you are now, and there’s no better time to tell them. Even if you just said it yesterday, and even if you’ve never said it before.

Tell your kids.

I love you.

I’m proud of you.

I’m glad you’re here.
