There’s Champagne in My Snow

On this day filled with half days of work and soft white stuff from the sky, what is the best way to celebrate/relax/avoid the outside world? By creating another installment of drinking through literature of course! Today’s installment is based off of Edith Wharton’s Ethan Frome.

Prior to today, I had never heard of the novel, but according to its Wikipedia page, it tells the tale of a love triangle and seems like it lead to the launch of mid-day soap operas. Really, if you haven’t read it either, read the Wikipedia page or watch the film adaptation with Liam Neeson and Patricia Arquette. The turn of the 20th century was weird.

As for the drinky bits, the drink was named the Ethan Pom. For those of you fancy enough to know what a Pom is, congrats. For everyone else, think of it as an adult slushie, but instead of being a fishbowl margarita from your local taco joint on a Thursday, it’s pomegranate juice and champagne. In case you were wondering, yes, champagne (or sparkling wine) does make everything instantly fancy. Kind of like sparkling grape juice at Thanksgiving Dinner.

For future reference, when making a drink involving shaved or crushed ice, don’t try and stick in in a blender, the ice is too light to stay on the blades. The open air in the blender can’t slow it down and pull it down like tequila, triple sec, and sweet & sour mix do. Instead, throw the ice in a plastic bag and beat it with a hammer like you’re a Norse god. Or if your feeling daring and are snowed in, grab some of the fresh white stuff (avoid the yellow stuff, it throws off the flavors). Then, add your champagne and pomegranate juice, don a top hat, and enjoy your adult slushie, the Ethan Pom, and your adult snow day. Watch out for trees when sledding though.
