The Break

When grief gets hyperbolic

Established on your pedestal
of dying
the sentence puts in the final
period
Your absence
has been noted
the fact that you wouldn’t remove
yourself from the candy and magazines
that shone out at you
in the convenience store

The fact is that your story
failed to move me, to get me
to pick up your faded guns and unused
ammunition
to take your argument on as mine
and bleed for it

The staples used by the firing squad
bounced off emotional skin
red
and blistered white
because of sun and too much time
on the hotel balcony
posing for the tourists

Evidently the break
comes off without a hitch
other than the holding of breath
that means you might not
have made it to the other
side
