What is it like to write while in community?

Several of us have been pioneering this experience. How does it work?

We open a Zoom room. People from all across the globe join us at a designated time. Any Medium writer, or even non-Medium writer, can enroll. We closely monitor and vette names of participants to avoid Zoom bombers, and maintain a safe space. There are rules. The people contributing to this publication are those who have had their work presented and polished in a weekly workshop.

We introduce a writers’ prompt. We take turns inventing and hosting the prompt.

Off we go for 30 minutes, doing our best writing to that prompt. When the 30 minutes is over, breakout rooms of 3 people each, randomly form. Each writer has 10 minutes to read — if they are comfortable doing so, no pressure— and receive feedback.

After that, we come back in the main room, all together, and invite anyone to receive feedback on their piece from the entire group. Sometimes…
