Most companies now have remote interviews as part of their hiring process. Although they are similar to on-site interviews, it’s super easy to blow it with small mistakes.

We’ve got some #WorkarooAdvice to make sure you don’t:

Get familiar.

Confirm what platform will be used for the interview as well as whether it will include video. In most cases, the link to join the call will be in your calendar invite. Set up the platform or sign up and do a test call. When in doubt, ask questions.

Don’t be late.

You don’t have Lagos traffic as an excuse. Try to set up your phone or computer ahead of time and join the call a few minutes early so you can find and correct any issues with connectivity, sound or your location.

Communicate.

If you can’t make it for an unavoidable reason, communicate early. Send an email hours or days before (not a few minutes before or after the call time) stating why you can’t make it and asking if the interview can be rescheduled.

Prepare

Find out the structure of the interview and what you need for it. This is very important for technical interviews. Your interviewer might require that you share your screen or some work product. Clarify ahead of time so that you’re prepared.

Research.

If you’re interviewing with a software company that has a customer-facing app or website. Download it, sign up, play around with it — make a list of improvements, bugs etc. It shows that you’re serious about the role and know what you’re doing. This will also prepare you for any questions about how you would improve the product.

All the best!
