Most of the business problems need the right mindset more than the perfect skill-set

Hire right the mindset

1. Avoid the Race to find “The perfect candidate”

WorkIndia is very fortunate that we are a leader in the blue-grey collar industry that makes us an authentic source to understand the psychology of HR in this domain.

Suppose Ajay is hiring a sales guys for his shop, then this what he looks for:

  1. The Candidate should stay in the nearby area
  2. The Candidate should work in the salary which I am providing
  3. The Candidate should be good looking and confident
  4. The Candidate should have done sales in same industry & in the same type of shop
  5. The Candidate must have done the sales of up to X amount
  6. The candidate should have X years of experience
  7. And many more like Language + Gender + Age

With the above criteria, Shop owners spend months to find the perfect one, in the meantime they forget that they are losing business in that timeframe

Believe me, “The Perfect candidate is a myth” It's a mindset & trap for those who are looking for “The Perfect candidate”

Action Item: Instead of looking for the perfect candidate who knows 50 things write down the Top 3 things, which you need in a candidate, and hire the reasonable one who can generate output for your business instead of waiting for The Perfect candidate.

For me, this is what I look for in a sales candidate:

  1. The Candidate must have done sales
  2. The Candidate should understand what he selling and why he is selling
  3. He should fit in my salary bracket

The Above three are more than enough for a sales candidate.

2. Hire Team members not laborers

Calibrate your mindset that you are hiring a team member who will be working as a team to grow your business instead of looking at them as laborers.

Avoid the attitude of “we are paying salary so they should do everything we are saying”

I know you are not doing this, You are great — but such employers do exist, we have seen this attitude.

It creates lots of attrition in the company which will push you again in a hiring loop.

Action Item: Treat them like a team member who is helping you to build your business, not like a laborer

3. Attitude is everything in the Candidate

Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference

Look for the candidate who wants to learn & has empathy for your customers.

Skills can be learned in weeks or months, same is not true for attitude

Action Item: Hear their personal story “why they want to join your company/shop”, which will help you to gauge his attitude.

4. Understand: We are not launching a rocket

I remember, In Feb 2020 one company posted “Data Entry Operator job” on the WorkIndia platform and got a good no. of candidate responses. They took interviews of ~10 candidates and gave us feedback that the candidates knew Microsoft Excel, MS Office, Internet, but don't know Pivot in Excel sheet so we rejected all.

I called him and after a 15 minutes talk, he himself realized that if the candidate knows Excel sheet basics, then Pivot is just another function that can be taught in 10 minutes.

The next day he called me and told: “we have hired sir, thank you for your help”.

Think this way: “We are not launching a rocket, where precision and accuracy are supercritical”. We are dealing with humans who have the superpower to learn basic things.

Action Item: Look for the candidate who has an attitude of learning, don't try to find a NASA scientist who knows everything.

Summary:

1. The perfect candidate never exist: Hire a reasonable fit
2. Hire Team members not laborers: Team members stay for a long, not laborers
3. Attitude is everything: Hire those who have a good attitude
4. We are not launching a rocket: Hire a candidate who can learn

I hope this was useful for you and it will help you to hire fast.

Thank you
