Art is an extremely powerful medium to express not only your imagination but also, your emotions, ideas and also deep conditioning beliefs.

Disclaimer: I teach an in-depth course on how to create your own Paint using only dirt and rocks. More information at the bottom.

Personally, I have found that using an abstract style offers more room for emotional expression and discovery of our own layers of consciousness.

The second quality of this practice is related to your intuition. It facilitates the connection with your inner self by letting go of control and expectations of your final work. You venture into the unknown and the abstract. It is a mixture of art and conscious meditation, where intuition is the guide.

It’s also an opportunity to release repressed emotions, capture messages from your subconscious, and can also guide you to discover your limiting beliefs on a wider view.

For those who are more advanced in the subject of self-knowledge, this technique is a transformation tool if it’s practiced continuously.

Let’s review the materials you will need for this practice.

Materials

  • Brushes, pencils or charcoal. As a suggestion, you can also make use of other natural means to make strokes or figures. Find vegetables that contain textures such as cucumber, lemon, flowers such as dahlias, leaves or any other element that awakens the “aha”.
  • Pigments. You can make use of any material you have on hand. Preferably the use of watercolors facilitates the malleability of the strokes.
If you have the opportunity to find powder pigments that are natural, I recommend it. These pigments usually come from minerals, rocks or simply from the ground. They are better energy conductors than normal acrylic paints and therefore intensify the result of the practice. If you would like to learn to make your own earth pigments, check my latest class on Skillshare.
  • If you don’t have paints, don’t limit yourself. You can also extract color from certain foods such as beets, turmeric, coffee, blueberries, spinach, pomegranate, spirulina, moringa, tea, among others. Look in your cupboard. There are no excuses.
  • Paper. Avoid squared paper.
  • Glasses with water. To clean your brushes, mix or dissolve your paints.
  • A notebook and pen, in case you decide to take note of something important during the practice.

Before Starting the Practice

When you have all your materials ready, find a relaxing music for your meditation, download it or play it from your computer, so you can put your phone in airplane mode. We don’t want interruptions or distractions.

Sit in a comfortable place and place all your tools around you. Remember to do it alone, this practice is about to express yourself as free as you can.

Set an intention. Since this is a personal discovery practice, you need to do it for a specific purpose. The power of establishing this intention activates the connection with the unified field, so you can tune into different planes and expand the possibilities of the exercise.

The practice

  • Play the music.
  • Close your eyes and focus your attention on your intention, take a deep breath and bring your mind into a state of observation. Visualize your hands and body filling with light with each inhalation. Give yourselves the permission to completely relax and feel your heart open to the present moment. Take as much time as you need until you start to feel more at peace for yourself.
  • Open your eyes and start painting. Focus all your attention on each stroke and each movement you make. Let your intuition guide you to choose the color for example. Remember, we are not here to draw the typical landscape with the house on the prairie, this is pure abstract art, lines, ellipses, geometric figures and textures. But I don’t want to limit you either, if you feel the call to draw people, things or different elements, feel more than free. The advice is to paint whatever comes to yourself, it can be thoughts, visions, feelings or sounds.
  • Let the practice flow. Avoid very long pauses or moments in which you realize that you are controlling the process too much.
  • Any emotion that is surfacing, let it out, your hands are the means of communication.
  • If this is the first time you’ve been painting for a long time, chances are you’re starting to feel a bit dissatisfied with what’s unfolding on paper. It’s totally normal, let your work be, as it is, no matter how disturbing it looks. Believe me, I’ve painted things that looked like the cover of a horror movie.
  • Don’t judge your work, judging will only make you stop. Keep your position of observer creator and continue.
  • The canvas is your channel of expression, if you feel that painting is not your thing, this practice is not about becoming Picasso. This is the opportunity for you to release repressed energies through figures, shapes or simply doodles that want to manifest at that moment.
  • If fear takes you too far, come back to the present and focus your attention on continuing to paint. Don't give up.
  • When you feel a sense of peace or tranquility, this may be a sign that it is time to culminate.
  • Take a deep breath and show your gratitude for the experience.

After the practice

Decide what to do with your work. This will depend on the meaning of the intention you have initially established, so I recommend you listen to your intuition once again.

The conventional decision would be to keep it if it looks aesthetically pleasing and get rid of it if it isn’t. So I invite you to look at it from a neutral perspective and find the message or learning behind it.

You can also make use of the elements, air, water, fire and earth. Any of them can serve as an activator for transformation. Remember, all objects hold an energetic charge. So, using them can be very helpful.

This practice serve the purpose of inspiring your self growth and to remove the barriers that you have created yourself based on your past experiences on life.

By unfolding them, you will become more conscious of your inner world and be able to unlearned what is not longer helping you and to learn what you are ready for.

If you feel that painting and art in general is helping you greatly, you are going to love creating your own pigments out of dirt & rocks. The process of collecting your own colors and painting with them will allow you to develop a stronger connection with yourself and mother nature.
