Happy New Year!

Here are the most popular stories from 2022:

1. Normative Ethics

I don’t usually write about ethics. But when I do, it becomes the most popular thing I’ve ever written. Normative Ethics: Deontology, Utilitarianism, and Virtue Ethics was actually published in Aug 2021. It appeared on Medium a few months later. But it wasn’t until Feb 2022 that it began to pick up steam. I don’t know how or why this happened. Good timing, maybe? All I know is that Google has since recommended the article to some 11K+ people.

2. Business Ecosystems

Medium Views is one way to measure popularity. But in the world of newsletters, it’s the “open rate” that reigns supreme. In 2022, the email with the highest open rate (63%) was Rendanheyi at MAQE: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, and Business Ecosystems. It was one of several ecosystem-inspired stories that did well this year. I guess you, dear Reader, is as interested in ecosystems as I am!

3. Future Studies

Yet another measure of popularity is… me! I put a fair amount of effort into all of these stories. But there are always a few that manages to stay top of mind. The two articles I wrote on foresight — Future Studies: Forecasts, Scenarios, Roadmaps, and Pathways and The Three Horizons: Improve, Scale, and Explore for Corporate Longevity — are perfect examples. More on this in 2023!

That concludes another year of WorkMatters — year 5 for those counting. Go to www.andreasholmer.com for a complete list of stories from 2022, 2021, 2020, 2019, and 2018.

Stay tuned for more stories on ecosystems, foresight, complexity, innovation, and coaching in 2023. I’m far from done. In fact, I think 2023 might be the year I experiment with different formats.

That’s all for this week.
Until next time: Make it matter

How can we build better organizations? That’s the question I’ve been trying to answer for the past 10 years. Each week, I share some of what I’ve learned in a weekly newsletter called WorkMatters. Subscription is free. Back-issues are published to Medium after three months. This article was originally published on Friday, December 30, 2022.
