Each week I share three ideas to help you build better organizations. Here’s one idea from me, one quote from someone else, and one question for you to ponder as you start your week:

1. Being Kind

A friend once remarked that there was a big difference between being nice and being kind. When you’re nice to someone, you tell them what they want to hear. But when you’re kind, you tell them what they need to hear.

2. Getting Hired

“[A]ccepting a job offer is a very emotional moment for a person. Making a big deal out of it is a good thing. Make a ceremony out of it. Invite the candidate to receive the offer in person. Create a ritual out of this process.”

3. Making Money

“Is it OK to make money by doing good in the world?” That’s a question that Patrick Fransen posed at Teal Around the World 2023. Patrick is a partner at Pebble Wave — a private equity firm that invests in purpose-driven companies. He adds: “If not, how should you make money?!”

How can we build better organizations? That’s the question I’ve been trying to answer for the past 10 years. Each week, I share some of what I’ve learned in a weekly newsletter called WorkMatters. Subscription is free and back-issues are published to Medium after three months. This article was originally published on Friday, March 10, 2023.
