Each week I share three ideas to help you build better organizations. Here’s one idea from me, one quote from someone else, and one question for you to ponder as you head off into the weekend:

1. Leading in Uncertainty

A few weeks ago I wrote about something called paradoxical leadership. Yet another example has crystallized for me in the last few weeks: As leaders, we are expected to embrace uncertainty outside the organization while simultaneously providing clarity and certainty within it.

More: Paradoxical Leadership

2. Teams and Conflict

“Teams, especially remote teams, are avoiding necessary conflict. We’re seeing it everywhere in our work right now. Yes, debate is harder in virtual environments, so too many teams are just avoiding it. Unfortunately, good work requires healthy conflict and tension.”

3. Making an impact

“Is the world a better place because your organization is in it?” That’s a question that authors Polman and Winston ask in the opening of Net Positive: How Courageous Companies Thrive by Giving More Than They Take. If not, what must you do differently?

How can we build better organizations? That’s the question I’ve been trying to answer for the past 10 years. Each week, I share some of what I’ve learned in a weekly newsletter called WorkMatters. Subscription is free. Back-issues are published to Medium after three months. This article was originally published on Friday, March 3, 2023.
