Organizational Learning: Single, Double, and Triple-Loop Learning

Each week I share three ideas on and about the future of work. And the theme for this week is organizational learning.

Why am I writing about this? I’m doing another speaking engagement in a couple of weeks, this time on Product-Led Growth (see w262020). Organizational learning is a key part of PLG and I stumbled upon the concept of “learning loops” in my prep work.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Single Loop Learning

You have a purpose. And you have a chosen method or strategy with which you’re trying to achieve that purpose. Single-Loop Learning is the type of learning that compels you to tweak or adjust the method and, in so doing, make incremental or sustaining change. It ensures that you’re “doing-things-right”. And it happens in the moment, as a result of tracking and monitoring. You can elicit Single-Loop Learning by defining KPIs and targets.

PRO: Relatively quick and easy to do.
CON: Shallow; risks addressing symptoms rather than the root cause.

2. Double Loop Learning

You again have a purpose and a chosen strategy with which to pursue that purpose. Double-Loop…
