45, 956, 432 meals shared so far, as today 24 October 2019, UN Day. From Palestine to Bangladesh, from Lebanon to India. From Syria to Haiti. And the list goes on.

Share the Meal, the world’s first App against global hunger

Children go to school for one year and they have a warm meal, prepared with fresh local foods, bought at community markets. Seasonal Fruits, Vegetables, Meat and Fresh fish. All local.

The children’s parents, which are part of the Management Committee of the school, manage the cash transfer they receive from the World Food Programme, and they buy seasonal products, conscious of the nutritional intakes and needs of the children.

With the help of WFP nutritionists, the parents define the Menu of the week, and the children cannot wait to go to school to get a different variety of food, thus growing stronger, happier and healthier.

In Madagascar, where the malnutrition rate is 42 % , and children under 5 years-old suffer from chronic malnutrition, for a total of 2 million children in the country, we want to give a hand.

The World Food Programme home-grown school feeding and cash programmes allow the School Management Committee to receive cash from the World Food Programme and it allows them to use it and link themselves with smallholder farmers, buying directly from local markets and community gardens — set up to diversify school meals ; Two advantages are a better financial education and knowledge of the school management committee on one hand, and better learning and concentration in school for children on the other hand.

On United Nations Day, when the world talks about climate change and the need of reducing our carbon footprint by eating less meat and choosing our foods wisely, the World Food Programme in Madagascar, in collaboration with Share the Meal App, wants to be practical and closer to children, the foundation of society: From today’s actions to tomorrow’s decisions. For the socio-economic development and progress of the forth largest and most bio-diverse island in the world.

WFP works to reach #ZeroHunger, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

A total of 30 schools adopting the cash transfer approach to the School Meals Programme will benefit from the fundraising: instead of receiving food, each school will receive cash used to buy fresh local products. Expanding economic opportunities and resilience of households and smallholder farmers, and connecting producers to consumers, on a linear supply chain that creates a win-win situation for all, from children to families.

A total of 10,800 children will get nutrient and sufficient food to go to school for a whole year! This action will have positive effects on their school performance, their learning and their opportunities for better employment in the future.

For us at the United Nations, our day 24 of October is like Christmas Day. Why not give back by making sure each child eats healthy for one year at school? We bet this is the best present you have ever given.

Let us show you how: Go to Share the Meal App or download it on your mobile phone using Google Play or Android. Make a donation (Share a Meal for 1 week, 1 month, 3 months, 1 year, Up to you as the amount you want, or a regular monthly donation — which can nourish one child for one year).

Thank you. Your action will make a difference.
