Food can allow for reconciliation and sustainable development. (Video grab)

A comprehensive strategic programme that focuses on long-term economic development is critical to increasing food security and improving long-term stability in the Sahel region in Africa.

This was a key message I highlighted recently at the Munich Security Conference, the major global forum for discussions about security policy.

As I told the panel called Securing the Sahel, WFP sees food as a weapon of peace, as a weapon of reconciliation, as a weapon for sustainable development. But we must get our act together. We must think holistically and not in our own silos.

You can watch my contribution in full in the video below (1:55:30).
