Shock Responsive Social Protection in the Caribbean

27 June 2019| 08:30–17:30 (GMT -4)| Providenciales, Turks & Caicos

Introduction

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), in collaboration with the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), and the Government of Turks and Caicos Islands, convened the first Regional Symposium on Shock-Responsive Social Protection in the Caribbean on 27 June.

The meeting brought together ministers and senior government officials from 15 Caribbean countries and representatives of regional and international organisations to explore issues, options and best practices for building regional resilience in the face of existing hazards. It introduced innovative perspectives and approaches in the realms of disaster risk reduction, public policy, social protection and climate risk financing. It also informed future line of actions for a more integrated developmental and humanitarian ecosystem in the Caribbean, including the establishment of a Community of Practice and key priorities moving forward.

The symposium was hosted as part of WFP’s ongoing Emergency Preparedness and Response programme in the Caribbean, in support of CDEMA and Participating States to minimise the impact of shocks on vulnerable populations, by strengthening systems and technical capacities for a more effective, cost-efficient and predictable response to emergencies.

You can download the post-symposium report here.

We are also pleased to share the Literature Review on Shock-Responsive Social Protection in the Caribbean, a collaboration between CDEMA, WFP and Oxford Policy Management, which offers an overview of DRM and social protection systems, and their potential for sock-response in CDEMA’s Participating States.

This page has been established as an information sharing platform for the symposium. If you have any issues accessing or downloading any of the files here listed please contact: francesca.ciardi@wfp.org

What factors enable social protection systems to be more responsive to shocks? This is the main research question of the Study on Shock-responsive Social Protection in Latin America and the Caribbean, a flagship initiative by World Food Programme (WFP) and Oxford Policy Management (OPM) in collaboration with many partners and governments in the region.
