The main issues with food shortages are children who suffer from malnutrition and anorexia because of these shortages. This plays a big part in the child's life as hunger can affect their education and emotions.

This philosophy is similar to the ideas of Asta Mikalauskiene, one of the authors of, “Social Aspect of Sustainable Development: Issues of Poverty and Food Shortage”. In his article, Mikalauskiene writes about food shortages and the lack of nutrition, which has an effect on children and compromised people around the world.

For example, “Shortage of necessary substances raises the threat of anemia, hindered mental development, absence of immune system, and blindness (Gilbert, 2004)” (Mikalauskiene 2018)

In other words, the shortage of necessary nutrition for a growing child can cause many problems. Some of these problems include anemia, burden mental development, lack of immune system, and blindness. This hinders the ability of children to focus on their education or develop properly versus their peers that do not suffer from hunger.

Thus, “Many people in the world are unable to properly feed themselves because they lack enough funds to acquire food, much less better quality food which would have more of the necessary microelements.” (Mikalauskiene 2018)

By way of explanation, Mikalauskiene connects the cause of hunger directly to poverty, he believes they lack the money to buy food, much less food with the necessary microelements for a healthy life.
