I believe Lucretius treats the Greek gods like a sort of nirvana. The Buddhists never worshipped a god and had the same view of materialistic goods in order to reach that “higher” state. When I saw his poem regarding Venus (Aphrodite), it showed me that he wasn’t exactly trying to take away from the “worshipping” part of the gods, as he shows he still revels in the Greek Religion, however he does show that he believes the gods have no control over their lives.
