9 Things to do in the Lake District that Aren’t Hikes

There’s only one lake in the Lake District called Bassenthwaite Lake. The others are meres or waters.

The Lake District is one of my favourite places in the world. I’ve been there many times and always look forward to going.

Located in the North West of England, the Lake District is completely within Cumbria. It became a national park in 1951 (70 years ago) and is the most visited national park in the UK.

With 15.8 million annual visitors to the lakes every year, there are a lot of things to do. The Lake District is very popular for hiking, some of which are beautiful. I highly recommend Catbells and Buttermere.

But there are plenty of things to do that aren’t about hiking.

Boat rides

With lots of lakes in the Lake District going for a boat ride is a great activity for everyone, from kids to grandparents. The most popular boat rides include Windermere Lake Cruises, Coniston Launch, Keswick Launch, Windermere Ferry, and Ullswater steamers.

I was always excited when one of our outings included a boat ride. We did a lot of hiking and some started and finished with a boat ride…
