A confession from a perpetual traveler
Maintaining a relationship is always a hard thing to do, especially while traveling.
Whether it’s a love from home or a romance in a foreign country, it can be trying. For the sake of keeping this a travel article, this piece is about what I call “destination relationships.” Or the latter of the previously mentioned.
Over five years of backpacking, I’ve shared more than a few instances of immediate, intimate connection. Mostly with strangers. Or, people who started as strangers, at least.
Those moments can mess with your emotions for a short time. Soon, though, they’ll fade into nothing but a sweet memory.
For example, a girl I met from Brussels, Belgium, met at a concert during my three weeks in Belgium. She was French-speaking but had picked up an American English accent from her time in the U.S. We spent several days together. There was an obvious attraction. It felt like a good feeling to stay and explore. I regret to say plans and engagements got in the way. But the few weeks together were everything.
