Carnival Cruise Lines decided to cancel their June cruises! We would have gone on our third cruise with two good friends of ours. “Have you guys ever been to an all-inclusive resort? We haven’t, but our daughter and her husband went to one on their honeymoon and loved it,” they said.

So, my wife and I decided to try the dry-land-cruise-like experience with them.

We took a van from the Cancun International Airport to the Excellence Riviera Maya. When we arrived at the resort, our luggage was unloaded and sent to our rooms. The head bellmen handed each of us a glass of champagne and said, “Welcome home.” Classy! I loved that!

The first full day we were there, it seemed like the whole resort smelled like rotten eggs. Due to Tropical Storm Claudette, it had been raining off and on in Cancun for 11 days. The wet seaweed along the beach was not getting dried out by the sun, causing an unfavorable smell.

Our stay was for nine days, and after two full days of sunshine (our fifth day), the smell was gone. While we…
