It’s Surprisingly Inexpensive

People have a misconception of Singapore being a very expensive city. And sure, it has some expensive attractions and is more expensive than other countries in Southeast Asia. But living there as an exchange student is actually very cheap.

Housing

Living in student housing can cost as little as $280 SGD ($210 USD) a month for a shared room with no air conditioning. Adding air-con and switching to a single room can increase the price up to $450 SGD ($340 USD). That’s still a lot less than what I pay back home.

Public Transit

Singapore has a very good public transit system, consisting of both buses and the MRT, a subway system that locals simply call the train. You can reach almost any point in the country quite efficiently and it’s extremely affordable.

When taking the bus, you scan your card both when entering and exiting, so you pay for exactly the distance you travel, and fares typically won’t cost more than a dollar or two. In addition, big…
