The world could learn from the massive election loss suffered by Mauritius’ ruling party.

16 June 2015

With ruling coalition People Alliance’s victory in the Municipal elections Sunday through a 120–0 trashing of the opposition, Mauritius democracy consolidates itself.

History has repeated itself, and the massive defeat registered by the MMM in the past still lingers in memory.

And it is not the end of the dustbin of history, receiving the once mighty leaders of the country into its abode.

Nevertheless, the massive defeat of the MMM is a lesson to the entire world.

Democracy, ‘ala’ Mauritian, is an amazing love-hate-rejection story that is not rivaled anywhere else on earth! Not even in the USA where it is claimed democracy was born, and not even in England, where democracy is now buried to satisfy racial and snobbish anti-migrant-anti-global-world sentiments!

Mauritius, my friends, is the courtyard, the battleground where democratic history is made on a global scale, but unfortunately the country’s foreign affairs division is living between four thick walls to be able to transmit to the globe these amazing people victories!

Is it the end for the MMM? The end for Paul Berenger, the man who created history by crafting a new Mauritius with his MMM and his crucial alliances with the Harish Boodho of Party Socialist Mauricien?

Paul is today the Gaetan that was in the 1980s and Mauritius is still marching on with its democratic prizes.

I just hope that the young generation enters the fray and get a taste of politics in order to ensure that this democratic legacy survives for decades and even centuries!

Kazi Mahmood was born and raised a proud Mauritian. He now resides in Malaysia but retains a strong interest in his home country.
