The next step in this Worldbuilding Workshop is to create a Continent.

In this step we’ll explore Deserts, Glaciers, Lakes, Marshes, Mountains, Plains, Rivers, Swamps, Tundra, Valleys, Countries, Provinces, Regions, and States.

If you’ve based your Universe in Science, then you can use the Earth and its Continents as your basis for reality. I like to start with the idea of a Planet with just one super Continent, which Earth had hundreds of millions of years ago called Pangea. Even though Pangea was a superContinent, one land mass, it’s been shown by Science to have been multiple Continents before and after… so it was still separated into varied terrains and not just one big terrain type.

When you create one or multiple Continents, your Planet can still be separated into Deserts, Glaciers, Lakes, Marshes, Mountains, Plains, Rivers, Swamps, Tundra, and Valleys, which will be the natural borders and demarcations of terrains to help you create your Planet’s Countries, Provinces, Regions, and States. Having varied terrains helps when it comes to creating your Planet’s Fauna and Flora which are often adapted to those specific terrains.

If you’ve based your Universe in Fantasy, then you might just have a Desert Planet, or a Glacier Planet, or a Swamp Planet, or a Candyland Planet, or a Talking Head Planet. You get the idea. You don’t…
