Yesterday, both Apple and Samsung were fined millions of euros due to their phones being slow and “planned obsolescence” in the companies’ smartphones.
According to BBC News, Apple was given a 10 million euro fine, while Samsung received a five million euro fine. The Italian competition authority said, “Apple and Samsung implemented unfair commercial practices.” People have been complaining about the planned obsolescence in the smartphones.
BBC News added, “Software updates were said to have slowed the performance of older phones which ‘caused serious malfunctions and significantly reduced performance’ which provoked users into upgrading their devices.”
So how did the two companies react to this? Samsung claimed that it was “dissapointed” with the decision to fine the company. A Samsung spokesman said, “Samsung did not issue any software updates that reduced the Galaxy Note 4’s performance.
According to BBC News, Apple has not yet commented on the fine. However, the company was fined more than Samsung because Apple “failed to tell customers important details about iPhone batteries — including how to prolong their lifespan.”
