With new technologies emerging every day, we’re finding new and innovative ways to connect, communicate, and interact — along with all new ways to express ourselves.

Together with these advancements in technology, we’re also seeing advancements in creative work — and the craft of fiction.

No, not that type of creative fiction…

Fiction has been around forever — from oral storytelling to books 📖 and comics, from radio programs 📻 to television 📺, movies 🎥, and even video games 🎮 — and it has a knack for adapting to the times. Indeed, creatives are constantly pushing the literary envelope and developing unique ways to tell new stories with the tech of the time.

This got us here at Woven curious about a simple question:

In the age of the internet, smartphones, IoT, VR, AR and any other “R” you can think of: what unique stories will we see next? 🤓

We’re captivated by the recent explosion in New Fiction, specifically all the experimentation being done in Social Fiction. We define these as:

  1. New Fiction: Fictional writing that strays from traditional forms of writing, specifically via employing new technologies.
  2. Social Fiction: New Fiction written on or through social media platforms.

These might sound so new as to not even exist yet, but there’s much more out there than you might think — in fact, the world is full of new and social fiction.

And given how well social media lends itself to storytelling, Social Fiction in particular is fascinating.

It might help to think of it like this: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat — every social media application tells the story of a user’s life, through their posts, pictures, likes, and comments. In this sense, people tell (create? :P) the story of their life every time they update these accounts.

But what if you made use of these applications to create fiction? What if you used them to inspire mystery, comedy, drama, or romance?

And what if the next great ’novel’ was written not as a conventional book, but through experiments in New Fiction? 😮

We’ve even got our pets hard at work looking for examples of New Fiction!

These ideas keep us up at night. We’re so excited by the myriad new storytelling methods and mechanics being created each day, that we’ve been combing the internet looking for them. This blog is where we’ll share them with the world. Through Woven, we’ll analyze how storytelling is adapting to evolving technology, and offer insight into how it might further develop with time, and into the future.

We’ll be looking at a new story each week, and we hope you’ll join us on the ride!

Enjoy!
