Introducing: Child Projects
For series and anthologies
Our newest feature for this week — you can now add child projects (or subprojects) to your series or anthologies.
While they mostly work the same, there are a few differences. The main differences are:
- SERIES child projects are assumed to have an order (eg. book 1, book 2, …). ANTHOLOGY child projects are not.
- Characters (et. all) of a SERIES can be assigned to multiple child projects. ANTHOLOGY characters (et. all) can only be assigned to one.
- On deleting a child project: For SERIES, all characters (et. all) will be unassigned and remain in the project. For ANTHOLOGIES, they will be deleted along with the child project.
Add
Child projects can be added on the project’s home page.
At present, tags and other settings that you can add on parent projects are not enabled for child projects. All child projects are “single projects.”
Order layout and Reorder
In ANTHOLOGIES, order pseudo-exists, but is not considered important because the child projects are assumed to not be related to each other. In SERIES, child projects are considered related.
To reflect this, child projects in a SERIES are shown with a number and stacked on top of each other. ANTHOLOGY child projects mimic the project layout on the dashboard.
If you want to change the order of the projects, click on the menu icon on the right and click “Reorder.” The UI will then display Reorder mode where you can drag-and-drop as you like.
Assign Characters
After a character is created, a new field on the character’s profile page appears where you can assign that character to child projects as well.
Please note:
- In ANTHOLOGIES, you can only assign characters to ONE child project.
- In SERIES, you can assign characters to as many as you wish
Focus on Child Project
(aka, only show things assigned to it)
At the top of the navigation side bar for series/anthologies there is the name of the current project you are working on and a little arrow.
If you click on this, you will get a popup with the main project on top and all child projects underneath. Select which child project you want to focus on.
Using characters as an example. I have assigned a character to one of my child projects, but not the other. Thus, my character will only show for one of them.
Delete
Deleting a child project works the same way you delete a character. Go to the child project’s page, click the menu on the top right, and then the “Delete” button. You will be prompted to confirm this is really what you want.
Please note: In an ANTHOLOGY, if you delete a child project, all characters, connections, etc. assigned to that child project will be deleted too. If you want to keep them, you MUST first unassign what you want to keep.
The purpose for this is it makes project cleanup a lot easier. Child projects in anthologies are assumed to not be related to each other. Thus, if you want to remove a story, it makes sense that data associated with that story are deleted too, just as they would be if you deleted a parent project.
In a SERIES, if you delete a project, all characters, connections, etc. will NOT be deleted. They will remain as part of the project.
Characters may appear across multiple child projects, so obviously they need to remain. Characters and plotlines only assigned to the deleted child project might be wanted for later use or recycled into the series. And so on…
