Since the 2010s, the short video industry has boomed. According to the 47th “Statistical Report on the Development of China’s Internet” released by the China Internet Network Information Center (CNNIC), as of December 2020, the number of Chinese netizens reached 989 million, of which the number of short video users was 873 million. Moreover, the per capita daily duration of use is 125 minutes. The short video APPs are not only popular in China, but all over the world. According to the intelligence data released by Sensor Tower, TikTok, with more than 57 million downloads in February 2022, has been ranked first in the global mobile application (non-game) download list. Through all this data, the popularity of short video software is obvious.
However, with the popularity of various short video software and the increase in the number of users, the problems existing in the short video industry have been exposed and attracted more and more social attention. In general, the income of short video anchors mainly comes from three aspects: income from video play volume, advertising income, and income from selling products through the platform. Under the influence of such a revenue model, in the short video industry, problems such as vulgar content, false content, plagiarism, selling fake goods, and tax evasion emerge one after another. In China, audiences for short video platforms vary in educational level. Many of them have weak ability to distinguish right from wrong and are easily deceived under the influence of short-video bloggers. As an industry that has only emerged in recent years, the society lacks experience in the regulation and supervision of the short video industry. In my opinion, we should start from all aspects, standardize the management of short video bloggers, and reduce the occurrence of violations of laws and regulations.
