Ancillary #4
My overall thoughts on the topic I’ve chosen is that there are two ways you could view it.The pandemic has led people to realize that they are very unhappy with the 9–5 job that everyone assumes they should do. The second way I viewed this prompt is that so many people who work minimum wage jobs have filed for unemployment during the pandemic because of the money the government had given out. I feel this would change the way people view work because it has given many the idea that in a bad situation the government will just give them more money than they were earning while working. In the second article posted it talks about how a couple realized that they were very unhappy doing normal jobs and not what they actually enjoyed. I found the statement, “A pew survey in January found that 66% of unemployed people have seriously considered changing occupations…A third of those surveyed have started taking courses or job retraining.” It’s interesting to consider that after the pandemic people have realized how unsatisfied they are with their job situations and are actually making changes. I believe the 9–5 job may start to decrease in employment status after the pandemic. In the last article they talk about how there is not enough concrete data to assume that everyone is actually quitting instead of thinking about it. This brings up a good point because many people say they’re going to do something but ultimately never follow through. I think I need to figure out through the other articles and my own on whether or not there is enough data to support “The Great Resignation”. An argument could be that the pandemic has changed the way we view the workforce because people are realizing they should do what they enjoy instead of what they are expected to do. The argument that is not so confirmed is that the pandemic changed the way we view the workforce because so many people have quit their jobs since it occurred due to dissatisfaction. I would need to find proof of this claim which may be difficult.
