People’s views on work have drastically changed during the Covid-19 pandemic. It’s been seen that now workers are wanting more remote options and flexibility within their work schedules and are ultimately the ones who are in control now because of how high the unemployment rate is. Karin Kimbrough, LinkedIn’s chief economist, talks about “It’s as if that social contract of work is being rewritten, and right now the worker’s holding the pen.” The social contract of work is the idea that people should still work unfulfilling jobs because it makes them money and therefore is necessary. Before the pandemic, corporations held the “pen” because they could give minimal flexibility and autonomy but still had high demand for the positions they were hiring. This is especially significant because now the workforce has shifted and there are thousands of positions available, but workers are looking at their options through a magnifying glass now.
