Many argue that monetary reparations are the best way to to address the severe disadvantages that are faced by many Indigenous Australians. An example of such an individual is Philip Ruddock, MP. Minister for Immigration and Multicultural. He believes that “the government’s $117 million response to the Bringing Them Home report is a substantial demonstration of [Australia’s] commitment to assist those that have been affected by past practices.” The ‘Bringing Them Home Report’ refers to Australia’s national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children from their families conducted in 1997. Ruddock supports the fact that the Australian government based their release of reparations on the extensive report that uncovers the horrible truths of Australia’s history in regards to the treatment of Aboriginal Australians and the stealing of their children. He believes that by handing out money to decendents of the stolen generations, Australia is attempting to “constitute a program of rehabilitation for those affected”. Whilst it is true that it is a good attempt at supporting Indigenous Australians to “address the hurt and trauma experienced by the separated children and their families”, there is much more that needs to and can be done for these people.
