I want to focus in on the topic of sexual harassment in the greek life sytem. Prevalent since the creation of fraternities and sororities, sexual assualt has been an unfortunately common pitfall for college guys. With dangers ranging from overly touchy people to cases of rape and drugging the problem is prevalent and needs to be addressed. Specifically within LA, fraternities at USC have been in hot water surrounding this topic recently. As of last semester, fraternity Sigma Nu was suspended after multiple cases of rape and sexual harasment was filed agasinst them. This most recent scandal has called the future of greek life, specifically at the USC campus, into question. A number of protests broke out at the Sigma Nu house on USC fraternity row with many individuals calling for the complete abolition of greek life due to its issues. Protestors voiced their support of this proposal as they thought any previous changes USC has promised to make in the past have been insignificant in stopping sexual assualt. Other dangers surrounding hazing and excessive drinking have fueled debates over the existence of greek life in the past years and the administration at USC has slowly but surely begun to crack down on the freedom and accessibility of fraternities and sororities. Problems arise in this case however as often times a whole fraternity and in this case, the whole system is represented by a few people who make poor decisions, ruining the enjoyable side of it for everyone. I like for a responsible step forward in this system that first and foremost places the safety of everyone involved at the forefront. However I feel I must include my own position as an active USC fraternity member. I have been able to see first hand the immense positives that this system has to offer. The brotherhood, relationships, and fun that it creates is something irreplaceable for college students. Although it is not meant for everyone, it undoubtedly betters the lives of those involved. Therefore, I think a solution is in order that ensures the safety of girls but also one that can maintain the positive side of greek life.
