Attack on titan has become very popular in the United States and Japan for many reasons mainly among teenagers. Attack on Titan even reached the top charts during the week of January 31st to February 6th reaching 110.5 times the demand of the average series. There were a multitude of reasons why Attack on Titan reached the top charts but the main reasoning behind this was a multitude of cultural factors and coincidences that resulted in the popularity of the show. The first reasoning is the depiction of the main antagonists of the show which are the Titans. The titans are these monstrous beings that range from a height of 3 to 15 meters that resemble humans greatly. The titans made AOT very popular because they are very similar with the japanese kaiju but many people overlook this that the titans are like kaiju. This is something we miss. Kaiju are the living emobidmement of national paranoia in Japan, the threat that any moment something could emerge and kill our lives, this same fundamental fear is what makes the titans so popular. This reflects the paranoia that came from world war 2, and the kaiju emerged in around the 1950s like Godzilla. This resulted in great popularity within Japan and this popularity caught on to other countries. Specifically in America, the concept of the Titan translated not to the idea of the kaiju but to zombies. Around the same time zombies in America became popular, anime was on the rise and Attack on Titan was realeased. TV shows like the walking dead were extremely popular and games like the Last of Us. The titans are just like these zombies. This is because zombies herald the fall of society because of the landscape it creates. It creates a post apocalyptic world just as in Attack on Titan where societal norms go away. It is a free get out of jail card for your financial problems and all your responsibilities, you are able to restart. This was very popular because it gave people the idea that they could escape from reality and their financial worries from capitalism are gone.
