I have had the pleasure of interviewing four very knowledgeable, young filmmakers who are making their bids to get into the industry. They are from different departments and have some wisdom to grant to aspiring filmmakers. In their interviews, they answer questions like their job description, how does one get a start in their respective departments, and some fun “don’t do’s” specific to their departments..

First, let’s visit the Sound Department. For this set, our sound team consisted of Bryce, our sound mixer, and Cassidy, our boom operator. A sound mixer operates an audio recorder that is hooked up to several types of microphones such as wireless lavalier and shotgun microphones. Usually, much of a production’s sound is recorded via a shotgun microphone extended out on a boom pole (operated by the boom operator).

Next, we have our Production Department. If the creative and technical departments on set are the backbone of production, the Production Department is the central nervous system. All things logistics, money, and human resources are handled by this department. Introducing: Val and Gerardo, Producer and First Assistant Director. On this set, the role of the Producer is to budget the entire production and organize logistics to get food and equipment to and from set. The First Assistant Director (1AD) keeps all of us on schedule, kind of like a dad with the family travel itinerary.

Last, but not least, let’s stop by the Camera Department. This department consists of the Director of Photography, operators, assistants, and imaging technicians. Speaking for us today is Jackie, Second Assistant Camera (2AC).

As we have heard from these rising filmmakers, there is no “one true way” in. There are so many roles on set that could serve as entry points. What all of their answers have in common is how much personal initiative entrants must take to be effective team players on set. However, do keep in mind that there are many other departments and roles this project has not touched upon. Departments such as Art, Makeup, Hair, Costume, and Health and Safety are all crucial to the set. Doing additional research on these departments and the ones explored in this project is recommended for a more well-rounded picture of what each department is like. As a career research launch pad video, I hope this demystifies some of Hollywood for you. See you on set!
