It was a slow Saturday, like most Saturdays are in the saga of my life. Volleyball with friends? Nope. A good long run? Ha, that’s a distant memory.

As I approach the big 4–0, I’ve embraced my impending middle age with the enthusiasm of a toddler clutching her teddy bear. And, like Detective Roger Murtaugh, I’ve fully adopted the mantra, “I’m too old for this shit.”

Anyway, back to our tale.

I’ve always dreamed of getting a nose piercing. Growing up in a super religious community, personal expression was about as welcome as a snowman in summer. When it came to piercings, I had two options: earlobes or nothing.

I left that strict community a few years ago, and now I’m on a mission to check off all the things I wasn’t even allowed to dream about.

So here I am, staring down the barrel of 40, tattoo-less and piercing-free, realizing my life’s so squeaky clean the only thing I regret is not having more regrets.

I’m as exciting as melted vanilla ice cream.
