At 51, I gave this online writing thing a go.

No writing background. No online presence. Just me, a second-hand laptop, and a strange sense that it wasn’t too late to try something new.

Eighteen months later? I’ve built a $50,000 business. From scratch. Mostly by winging it and hoping the internet gods would be kind.

Here are five painful (but weirdly encouraging) lessons I’ve picked up along the way.

I hope they help you skip a few faceplants.

1. Your self-doubt is full of it

Most writers I meet struggle with self-doubt.

(The rest are just better at pretending.)

You’ll constantly wonder if you’re any good. You’ll compare yourself to that person who started last Tuesday and somehow already has a book deal. You’ll stare at your blank screen and think, “What’s the point?”

It’s normal. But it’s also a lie.

Confidence isn’t something you magically feel. It’s something you build. One tiny win at a time…
