Have you ever paused your scrolling when you see an ad on Facebook or Instagram about a “smart” gadget and thought, “WOW! This is cool — Let’s check it out, but the next moment you think, do I even need it?”

Me too.

We’re building smart homes—voice assistants that listen to our commands, cameras that watch 24/7, and toasters that “predict your breakfast.” It sounds exciting… until things take a weird turn.

Let me walk you through the top mistakes every one of us—maybe even you and I—makes when welcoming IoT into our homes.

Mistake #1: Default Passwords = Easy Target

Let’s be honest: Who changes the default password anyway? It’s like leaving your front door unlocked.

That smart camera you installed? With “123456” as its password? Anyone can log in. Always use strong passwords and “do not share” them with anyone unless he/she is your family member.

Hackers know these common patterns. They look for easy wins. Don’t let your devices be one.
