We’ve all experienced losing ourselves in Medium’s engrossing content, reading article after article that imparts fresh perspective, new skills, and inspiring stories. And if it strikes a chord with us, I’ll make a thoughtful remark. But a question remains after the browser window closes: what becomes of all the knowledge we have amassed? Do you just live there, unused, in the enormous library that is our minds? Or, after reading the article, do you take action?
In this day of overabundance of information, it is simple to fall into the trap of passive consumption. We read through a lot of articles, picking up bits of information but never really applying it to our day-to-day lives.

However, the real benefits of reading are not merely in gaining information but also in putting that information into practice.
There might be a big gap between reading and action. We could have knowledge overload, feel overburdened, and not know where to start. It’s possible that the information itself lacks precise instructions, leaving us unsure of how to use it in our particular situations. We can also be held back by our fear of failing or the magnitude of the change.

However, the potential rewards of bridging this gap are immense. Taking action based on what we learn can empower us to:

  • Develop personally

We can finally get the hang of that new skills, get better at communicating or pursue a lifetime passion.

  • Professional advancement

We can acquire the skills and self-assurance needed to take on new tasks, move up the corporate ladder, or even start our businesses.

  • Bring about positive changes
By using what we’ve learned, we may improve our communities, support causes that are important to us, and truly alter the world.

Do we close this important gap that exists between reading and action?

Here are some useful suggestions:

  • Accept active reading

Don’t merely read articles quickly. Make notes, highlight important details, and even provide an original summary of the content. When you’re ready to act, this approach of active involvement will help the information stick and become easily accessible. You can think back on the article and pinpoint one or two key takeaways.

  • Make an action plan

Keep the lessons you’ve learned fresh in your memory. Convert them into attainable, tangible objectives. This could entail determining the resources you require, establishing deadlines, and segmenting more complex jobs into smaller ones.

  • Build accountability

Share your goals with a trusted friend, family member, or online community. Having someone hold you accountable can be a powerful motivator and provide valuable support throughout the process.

We can become active agents of change by putting these methods into practice and moving away from being passive consumers. Recall that the real impact of reading is not determined by our knowledge base but rather by our ability to apply that knowledge to better our own lives and the lives of those around us.

Consider your personal reading preferences. Do you engage in passive information consumption? Select a recent Medium post that you read, and make a commitment to putting its lessons into practice by performing one specific action. Encourage others to close the gap between reading and action by sharing your experience in the comments section below!

Thank you for reading to the end 👍
