The crime
On the night of February 2, 1933, a Thursday, René Lancelin has thought about taking. Léonie and Genevieve. to dinner later at a friend’s house.
Mother and daughter went shopping that day and when they returned home in the afternoon, they found the house in darkness. The Papin sisters explained that the electricity had gone out because Christine had used the iron.
Léonie was furious and attacked the sisters on the first floor of the house. Christine Papin then hit Léonie in the head with a heavy jug. Genevieve attacked the sisters to protect her mother. Christine reacted by attacking the young woman’s eyes. At some point Christine ordered Léa to gouge out Léonie’s eyes, which she obeyed.
Christine ran to the kitchen where she grabbed a knife and a hammer.
Upon returning to where the Lancelins were, the attack continued in a frenzy that lasted about half an hour.
