The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of world war 2 left outlines of people on the ground and shapes of buildings on the sidewalk.

Here’s why. There is renewed buzz in the public over the race for building atomic weapons due to Christopher Nolan’s recent blockbuster Oscar winner Oppenheimer.

However, focusing as he does on the development of atomic weapons and being fully immersed in the process, this movie does not depict the direct outcome of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But on the dusty, cratered streets of the two battered cities, the appalling fact was all too visible.

Long silhouettes of humans and objects such as bicycles, for instance, were discovered on the sidewalks and sides of buildings in two of the biggest cities in Japan, namely Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 6 and 9, 1945, respectively following the occurrence of the atomic explosion.
