Niche or Notoriety? Can you have both?

As a multi-passionate writer, poet, and storyteller, the question of whether to “niche down” and commit to one defined focus, or embrace the freedom and versatility of building a personal brand, has influenced my choices for the past 12 years of my writing career.

Though I ghosted social media for almost eight of those years, I recognized the opportunity and freedom it provides writers who want to sit at the helm of their authorship.

Still, the problem for me has been twofold:

  1. Confining myself to a single niche has always seemed stifling, as though I’d be forced to leave parts of my creativity behind. Yet, I cannot deny the appeal of building authority to advance stability and purpose as a writer.
  2. Building a broader personal brand takes more time but also requires sharing aspects of the person behind the work. While I have written personal narratives, I am shy about my personal life.
