Dear Writers! We all share a challenge: How can we keep readers engaged in our stories for at least 30 seconds?
Achieving a good read ratio, around 70%, is critical to earning decent money with fewer reads. For instance, with 100 reads, you could make approximately $10–$20.
So, what’s the solution?
Through my experience on Medium, I’ve learned a few things about readers. While they appreciate quality stories, distractions are a common hurdle.
Here are some unique techniques I use for writing on the Medium platform:
1. Use a catchy, eye-catching title to draw readers into the story.
2. Ensure the story has short paragraphs and clear sentences.
3. Include attractive images to enhance the reader’s experience.
4. Format the story with article titles.
5. Use bold and italic text strategically.
If you can keep a story short, go for it. Straightforwardly deliver maximum value — don’t waste your reader’s time. After reading, your audience should have learned something and feel content.
Remember, they may only return if they think they’ve spent their time. The first impression is crucial.

This story exemplifies how I keep readers engaged, counting as a view. As you know, a view affects your read ratio. I’ve had stories with a low read ratio, earning only $0.20 for tens of reads, resulting in lower overall earnings.
