My last job as a marketing copywriter drained me.

It was as if I didn’t know what I was doing.

Every marketing piece I wrote was thumped down and all the suggestions I made were disregarded.

It got to a point where I knew it was either the job or my life and I knew better.

You see…

I got into writing and subsequently copywriting because I loved the idea of helping people solve their problems with the products and services I wrote for.

In the last three years, I’ve done that, made the mistakes and learned on the job.

I know this might seem like my ego talking, but the truth is nothing weakens a creative as much as talking down on their work.

That’s why I made the decision to use the skills I’ve acquired to make something for myself.

And here’s how I’ve been able to do in the last three months of quitting my day job…

1. I leveraged work with other brands.

My last contract was almost exclusive which meant I couldn’t take work from competitors.

But ever since I left, I have been getting freelance gigs from other brands and this has helped me balance up my finances as a writer and freelancer.

Though I am still picky with my choices, but I love the freedom to choose whoever I want to work with and how much I want to be paid.

2. I am selling my own program now.

My overarching goal is freedom.

And freedom for me is having not worry about basic things while enjoying the simple things of life.

I believe that writing can help me with that after all, we all are in the digital information business.

That’s why I created writing programs that fetch me a handful every now and then.

3. Building my own email list and writing for paid publications.

This is a long game but I am enjoying the ride so far.

The trickles from paid publications like Medium help to offset some of my bills and that for me is good.

With time, I believe things will be fine.

In conclusion, I have not figured out everything yet, but I am enjoying throwing myself in the unknown and getting answers to the problems I am solving.

I hope this helps.
