Chennai, India, September 2024!

Eric Johnson (Principal Developer Advocate, AWS) and I participated in two AWS Cloud Club events at St. Joseph’s Group of Institutions and Panimalar Engineering College. Their Cloud Club Captains, Jeevitha (St. Joseph’s) and Madhavakumar (Panimalar), organized the events, which AWS Hero Vivek Raja guided.

This article summarizes the talk “Be an Engineer” I gave to Computer Science Engineering students at the above institutions.

An engineer is a practitioner of engineering. The word Engineer originated in Latin and is related to Ingeniator and Ingeniare.

Ingeniare — i.e., Engineer — means someone who possesses Ingenuity. The meaning of Ingenuity in English is Creativity.

The number one quality of being an engineer is Creativity!

1. Creativity

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself! — George Bernard Shaw.

Create yourself

As aspiring engineers, first, you must create yourself — mould yourself to be an engineer.
