How to Choose the Best Online Platforms for Building an Audience and Earning Money
WARNING: This is bad thinking
A writer who’s done quite well and “blown up” his audience on Medium in the past year or so called Substack a “goldmine” for writing online. Other well-known writers on Medium have switched to Substack, too, so Substack must be the best new place to go.
Correct?
Not so fast.
Some of the writers doing well on Substack are pitching to … other writers. Just like they did on Medium.
To emphasize this, read the article by Pathless Pilgrim titled “Why I’m Ignoring Sinem Gunel’s Advice to Move to Substack.”
Others have gone to Ream for fiction and … I’m sure I could go on and on.
Chasing platforms is a bad idea.
You could also ask, “What’s better to build a following: TikTok? Facebook? Instagram? X? LinkedIn?” And, don’t forget Bluesky. And YouTube.
And Amazon and Books2Digital for publishing e-books.
I’ve seen raging TikTok stars posting on X. And from X, creators posting on Instagram. Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
