Unfortunately, there will come a time when we, as parents, need to have this conversation with our kids if we wish to educate them and make them respectful human beings who can hang around others and be safe.

I was not expecting to have this conversation with my 5-year-old so soon.

But we did, and it happened playfully.

He came up to me and told me “Dad's skin is black, Mom’s is yellow, and mine is goldish”.

It caught me by surprise since we never talk about skin color at home and I don’t believe they do at pre-school either.

I laughed a little and asked, “Where did you learn this”?

He replied, “Nowhere. I just know”.

But the most interesting thing about all this was what he told me afterward.

“If I eat healthily and drink a lot of water it will be even golden!”.

He’s right. If you eat healthily and drink water, your skin will glow and look better. No matter the color.

I guess that he drew this conclusion because I’m always telling him to eat healthily so he can grow…
