Is Medium Dead? My Earnings After a 4-Month Break
I stopped writing on Medium in November 2024, and my earnings have taken a steep dive since then.

But does that mean Medium is dead? Let’s take a look at my numbers and see what they reveal.
My Monthly Earnings (September 2024 — March 2025)
- September: $43.55
- October: $28.15
- November: $15.10
- December: $7.11
- January: $0.78
- February: $1.72
- March: $1.70
The pattern is clear: my earnings dropped significantly after I stopped publishing. In just four months, my revenue went from $15 in November to under $2 in March.
What This Means
- Medium rewards consistency. Before my break, I was earning over $40 in a month. The moment I stopped writing, my numbers plummeted.
- Old content still earns, but not much. Despite not writing for months, I still made a few dollars from past articles. However, the decline is unavoidable.
- Earnings per read (EPR) is lower. A few cents here and there show that traffic isn’t enough — you need engagement and quality reads.
Lessons Learned & Future Plans
- Regular publishing is key. Even one or two articles a month kept my earnings from dropping drastically.
- Distribution matters. Some of my highest-earning articles were shared in Facebook groups, proving that external traffic can help.
- Medium isn’t dead, but you can’t ignore it for too long. If you stop, your earnings will too.
So, is Medium dead? No, but it does demand attention. I’m considering getting back to writing and testing new strategies. What’s your experience with Medium lately?
