It is the Year 1432 in Our Calender Today!
Happy Bengali New Year
This morning felt a little extra special. I woke up to the smell of fresh and soft, fried bread called luchi and a spicy potato curry , which we call aloor dum.
It’s a classic dish made at home, especially on a day like today.
You might wonder what is so special about today? Because it is….. our Bengali New Year!
As per the Bengali calendar, it is the first day of the year 1432 today. In our language , we say happy new year as — Shubo Noboborsho!
In case you are not familiar about the Bengali community of India, let me give you some idea. Bengal is a region in South Asia — mainly West Bengal India. So, just like how people celebrate New Year’s Day in January, with parties, we celebrate ours in April, with family, food, music and lots of love….ohh and of course, sweets!
I remember my childhood, wearing new clothes gifted by relatives, eating sweets and going around wishing everyone “Shubho Noboborsho” — which simply means “Happy New Year” in Bengali.
Stores would open new account books, people would visit temples or pray at home, and you could hear traditional Bengali songs playing from every corner.
