January was a wake-up call for me. It completely shifted my perception of Medium’s earning potential, making me realize that while the platform offers opportunities, it isn’t something you can fully rely on to pay your bills.
I don’t want to sound negative, but given the current circumstances on the platform, this is the reality.
The Harsh Truth: Medium Isn’t a Reliable Primary Income Source
When I started writing on Medium in July, things were very different. In fact, Pakistan wasn’t even eligible for Medium’s Partner Program, meaning I wasn’t expecting to earn a single penny. Back then, I had only a few poems and some philosophical reflections in my arsenal, and my goal was simply to share my thoughts, not to earn money.
But nature had different plans for me.
I published three poems in July, but by the end of the month, I was already contemplating quitting. As an engineer, I was naturally concerned about my return on investment, and without any earnings, continuing felt uncertain.
