Mao Zedong is one of the most significant and at the same time one of the most debatable figures in Chinese history. Mao as the founder of the People’s Republic of China initiated the process of change towards the socialist system.

Yet, some of the actions that he took during his leadership and the policies that he implemented were equally criticized and proved to be disastrous. In this article, we will discuss Mao’s leadership, his errors, and the ecological disaster connected with the “Four Pests Campaign. ”

Who Was Mao Zedong?

Early Life and Career:

Mao Zedong was born in the year 1893 in the province of Hunan. He was born into a poor family and became a Marxist early in his life and was one of the founders of the Chinese Communist Party and gained leadership in the 1930s.

Founding of the People’s Republic of China:

This is because after the Chinese Civil War which was won by the Chinese Communists in 1949 Mao declared the formation of the People’s Republic of China. He aimed to transform China into his socialist model and reduce the country's affiliation with the West.
